purchase a bear off the streets.

Black Diamond Community Art Wall:
Each season, we feature the work of local artists.  In
the past we have featured the photography of Mike
Nyman (
mikenymanphotography.com), Linda R. Davis,
 Aaron Fox, and Paul Tokarowski
(
tokarowskidesign.com), as well as the artwork of
Shrewsbury High School and Middle School students.

FEATURED ARTIST: April 08 thru June 08
Beverly Clark,
ATR, LMHC, a plein-air painter
captures the rural character of New England, Florida,
New Mexico, Nova Scotia, Oaxaca, Mexico and
Southern Spain with a compelling emotional viewpoint,
an excellent quality of light, a solid understanding of
composition, a balanced solidity of forms and a rich
handling of values, achieving an intimacy and
luminosity in her paintings that are uniquely her own.
Beverly began her painting in Mexico in 1970, studying
for two years with renowned British painter Toby
Joysmith.  Throughout the 1970's Beverly studied at the
University of the Americas in Mexico City and the
Worcester Art Museum.  In 1978 she graduated from
Anna Maria College with a degree in Art Education and
upon graduation taught at David Prouty HS.  Beverly
received a Masters Degree in Art Therapy from Lesley
College in 1985, and worked for the next sixteen years
as an art therapist, establishing her private practice in
1988.  Beverly's work has been published by the House
of Affirmation, Hopedale, MA, and she has received art
show awards and cultural commission art grants.

"........The goal of that particular night was to raise
$1,000, which is what it costs to take a bear off of the
streets of India. At the Black Diamond Café in
Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, they took in $1,300 in
three hours. To honor a donor who rescues a bear
from a life of torture, the rescuer is asked to name the
bear; in January, “Diamond,” a three week old cub,
was rescued from poachers and brought to the
sanctuary."

Shrewsbury Public Library invites you to join us
for this
Big Read book discussion of Willa
Cather's classic American novel "My Antonia".
Bring your copy of the book and join others in an
informal discussion.  No prior discussion group
experience is needed. In fact, those who have
never attended a book discussion group are
especially encouraged to give it a try.  Various
library staff and community volunteers will be
leading the informal discussions. No sign up is
required for the free meetings. Copies of the book
can be acquired in advance at the Shrewsbury
Public Library.
